Amerigo Vespucci was born on March 9th, 1454 in Florence Italy. A cartographer, merchant, and navigator was he. He went from supplying ships to joining expeditions as a navigator. Between 1499 and 1502 Vespucci  played an important role on two voyages which took place on the coast of South America. He discovered, and proclaimed that America was not part of eastern Asia contrary to popular belief. Martin Waldseemuller created a world map and named the new continent "America" after Amerigo Vespucci, in 1507; the label stuck. Vespucci spent the years after his exploration as a maritime official for King Ferdinand. He died on February 22nd, 1512. He is remembered and honored by the country's title.
